The electrical was updated in 2011 and emergency lighting was added. A wood-burning furnace was added and is exterior to the home which helps reduce the cost of heating. A new commercial septic system was installed in 2012. A new roof was added in 2013. Two new HVAC units have been installed.

The property was professionally landscaped. Terraces were built to create a lawn area and have now been turned into raised gardens. Hiking trails surround the property and wind through the neighborhood. The building department stated in 2014 that the slope of the property would make it suitable to create two other homesites if it became desirable to add such and divide the property. They suggested building two triplex cabins to best utilize the land.
Samuel Kress built the Lodge in 1940 as a vacation home and corporate training center for his dime store enterprises. He brought in Italian masons to do the stonework, but utilized local labor to build the structure. Hundreds of locals were hired during the construction and many were even trained in construction to complete the project allowing them to help feed their families between the two World Wars and bad times in the mountains.
In the mid 1960’s the property was sold to Smoky Mountain Mental Health and utilized as administrative offices for a 6 county area here in WNC. They offered short-term programs for troubled youth and many youthful offenders were saved and put on the path to a better life because of their programs.
In the late 1990’s the property was sold and was utilized for light industrial purposes. Two different companies provided work for locals and updated the electrical supply.
In 2010 the owners purchased the vacant property, fully furnished it, upgraded everything and turned it into a B&B. The couple worked with their children to build the business. They had a four+ star rating. Since my children had to move back to Florida to take care of their businesses, it has been used as our private residence and the commercial licenses have lapsed.
An appraisal of the property was made in July 2015 using the Cost Approach because there were no comparables within the designated mileage or even in Jackson County. Baker Appraisal Services, Inc appraised the property at $940,000.00.
